Pattern 223
'Chinese Temple' print. This print was only used on mugs, jugs and vases.
The full entry in the Pattern Description Book for Pattern 223 reads:
'Mugs Jugs & Vases &c. Print S Brown. Blue on biscuit. Lustre Edge. Chinese Temple Same as 222 but Not Gilt (except Handles of vases -).'

The mug is 74mm high and 79mm diameter at the rim. The handle protrudes by 31mm.

This mark is typical of the early Ridgway, Morley, Wear & Co period.

Pattern 3/1365
This print doesn't appear to have an official name but was referred to as 'Steam' in the factory engraving department. Exactly how it got this name I am not clear, perhaps it refers to the wispy border visible inside the mug, who knows? Late versions of it have the number '1365' included in the printed mark. This example is a nice early Francis Morley one with no printed mark.
The full entry in the Pattern Description Book for Pattern 3/1365 reads:
'Table Pruss'n Sh, Imp'l Cov'd p's. Dessert Clar'n Ew. Printed in Mulberry. nothing on biscuit. brown edge. As 790 bu Ew & Pruss'n Sh flat printed in Mulberry & flown. enamell'd exactly the Same.'

The mug is 83mm high and 93mm diameter at the rim. The handle protrudes by 28mm.
