Ridgway & Morley
I believe it was Geoffrey Godden who recorded somewhere, though I have recently been unable to track the reference, that he found a book at the factory that stated that the last Hicks pattern was 128 and that subsequent numbers relate to the products of Ridgway, Morley, Wear & Co. When I attempted to trace this book on my visits to the factory I was unsuccessful. This number only relates to the Stoneware patterns. Hicks & Meigh porcelain patterns rise into four figures.
In the Pattern Description Books I discovered at the factory, which are now housed at the Wedgwood Museum, I read the following note: 'All Nos Above 370 to have a 3 over the number - Thus &c 3/371'.* William Ridgway's three factories appear to have had a joint marketing arrangement and this introduction was probably to avoid confusion with the Church Works numbering system. I have found some plates of pattern 370 numbered 3/370; presumably this was an error.
Further confusion is also caused by the three factories exchanging earthenware blanks. Products with Broad Street Works and Bell Works patterns are therefore often found on blanks with Church Works impressed marks. Pattern numbers of 3/371 and above on William Ridgway shapes are always Broad Street patterns. Patterns numbered 370 and below should be checked against those listed below and on the Church Works page or in the Pattern and Pattern Description Books at the Wedgwood Museum to ensure correct attribution.
